TF GROW · Support sport · Train with a focus

Athletic Performance

More focused physical training for young people already participating in sport.

Who it may suit

Young people with existing sport participation who want a clearer physical training focus in movement, strength or conditioning.

How it is organised

An athletic development group format, with arrangements discussed around goals and experience. This supports physical abilities; it is not technical coaching in every sport.

What practice can look like.

These examples illustrate teaching tasks. Difficulty and combinations depend on readiness.

Illustrative training task

Accelerate, decelerate and restart

The task
Start along a short route, slow down in a marked area and move towards a new target.
What the coach looks for
Preparation for slowing down and organisation of the next movement after a turn.
How it can adapt
Begin with a fixed route, then add direction cues when appropriate, alongside the existing sport schedule.

Illustrative training task

Connect strength with movement

The task
Follow a suitable squat or support task with a short movement task.
What the coach looks for
Control during strength practice and clarity of movement during the transition.
How it can adapt
Adapt resistance, task volume and recovery to movement quality; fatigue alone does not justify progression.

How a session can come together.

An example of session organisation, not a fixed duration or a prescribed sequence for every session.

  1. 01

    Warm up and check readiness

Use simple activity to understand readiness on the day.

  2. 02

    Focused practice

Explore the theme and adapt difficulty through observation.

  3. 03

    Apply the skill

Use the movement in tasks with changing rules or directions.

  4. 04

    Review

Describe the practice, observations and next focus.

Match arrangements to experience, understanding and goals. Review the tasks, observations and next priorities, with the feedback format agreed as part of the programme.

Training focus

01

Acceleration and deceleration

Practise body control when starting, moving and stopping.

02

Changing direction

Adjust direction as task demands change.

03

Strength and force production

Build appropriate strength and the ability to apply it.

04

Conditioning

Use suitable sustained activity around the demands of movement tasks.

05

Schedule coordination

Consider existing sport sessions when discussing training priorities and load.

How to start

Explain the sport, current training schedule and physical priorities, then discuss suitable current programmes.

Explore our approach ↗
01How does this fit alongside football training?

Share the current training and competition schedule first, then discuss physical priorities so that physical preparation and sport practice work together.

02Does this replace technical sport coaching?

No. Athletic development supports physical abilities. Sport-specific technical work remains part of the relevant sport programme.

03Are competition results guaranteed?

No competition results or percentage improvements are promised. Training focuses on observable tasks and agreed priorities.

Find a suitable training arrangement

Start with your training interests and experience, then explore suitable grouping, times and how to join.
