TF GROW · Build foundations · Progress gradually

Youth Fitness

Develop a broader movement foundation through basic skills, body control and strength.

Who it may suit

Children and young people looking to broaden movement experience, learn fundamental skills or establish regular activity. Suitability for a current group depends on experience and understanding.

How it is organised

Primarily venue-based group training. Tasks can vary in difficulty within a shared theme. Grouping considers experience, understanding and goals.

What practice can look like.

These examples illustrate teaching tasks. Difficulty and combinations depend on readiness.

Illustrative training task

Deceleration and body control

The task
Move over a short distance, slow down inside a target area and come to a controlled stop.
What the coach looks for
Whether slowing down begins early enough and control is maintained after stopping.
How it can adapt
Change the distance and target area first; introduce direction changes when the task is manageable.

Illustrative training task

Landing and balance

The task
Make a small jump between floor markers, find balance, then begin the next attempt.
What the coach looks for
Landing control, balance and understanding of the task sequence.
How it can adapt
Shorten the distance or use a step first, then gradually combine movements.

How a session can come together.

An example of session organisation, not a fixed duration or a prescribed sequence for every session.

  1. 01

    Warm up and check readiness

Use simple activity to understand readiness on the day.

  2. 02

    Focused practice

Explore the theme and adapt difficulty through observation.

  3. 03

    Apply the skill

Use the movement in tasks with changing rules or directions.

  4. 04

    Review

Describe the practice, observations and next focus.

Match arrangements to experience, understanding and goals. Review the tasks, observations and next priorities, with the feedback format agreed as part of the programme.

Training focus

01

Movement learning

Explore running, jumping, throwing and catching.

02

Balance and control

Practise support, rotation and landing tasks.

03

Basic strength

Build foundations with suitable pushing, pulling, squatting and lifting tasks.

04

Speed and agility

Practise starting, stopping and changing direction.

05

Game application

Apply familiar movements in games with clear rules.

How to start

Discuss previous activity and training needs, explore current groups, then confirm the course details before starting.

Explore our approach ↗
01How can we understand the learning process?

Ask about the tasks practised, movement observations and next priorities. The feedback format is agreed as part of the programme arrangements.

02Is this just equipment-based play?

Equipment and games may support practice. The focus is movement learning, body control and gradual progression.

03How are groups organised?

Age is one reference point alongside experience, understanding and goals. Enquire about current arrangements.

Find a suitable training arrangement

Start with your training interests and experience, then explore suitable grouping, times and how to join.
